Centennial Art Project

In 2017 the City of El Segundo celebrated its 100th anniversary, and to culminate the celebration it will commission an artwork to be permanently installed in a prominent public location in the city. The city’s Arts and Culture Advisory Committee (ACC) is conducting the Call for Artists for this project.

Application must be submitted by Tuesday May 8th, 2018

1) Create a new focal point to draw people and business to El Segundo.
2) Enhance and enliven the civic environment.
3) Provide a “photo-op” where people picture themselves in El Segundo.
4) Excite the city with a symbol of “new things that are happening”.
5) Stimulate continued growth of the arts scene in the city.

El Segundo’s population is 17,000 and over 70,000 people work here, many for major defense, aerospace and tech-related industries. LAX adjoins El Segundo residential area to the north; Chevron, the west’s largest refinery, is within the south of the city. The beach is less than a mile west of downtown. Sepulveda Boulevard in the east separates the low-rise areas of the city from high-rise, regional retail districts.

Downtown’s primary commercial activity is along Main Street and Grand Avenue. ESMoA on South Main offers cutting-edge shows of contemporary work that is unusual for a small city. Nearby in the light industrial, tech, and creative use district called “Smoky Hollow”, art-related businesses and studios are increasingly locating. El Segundo Art Walks draw thousands to galleries, studios, and “open house” exhibits throughout this area during summer months.

Location, Concept, Budget

The ACC has identified four potential locations for the artwork, described on the following pages. The artists who are selected to submit final proposals for the project will be free to choose their preference.

The ACC does not have any artistic style in mind for this project. It may be realistic or abstract, a single object or an arrangement of elements. It should, however, be uniquely reflective of El Segundo: its character, nature, history and potential future. It should engage the public and spur further development of the city.

There is a $26,000 budget for this project. This includes the artist’s fee, travel, materials, fabrication, shipping, liability insurance and installation on site. Other site work such as enlargement of a traffic median, new landscaping, or physical alterations for accessibility will be considered for separate funding.

Artist Proposals

Artist Proposals
To minimize travel and logistical issues, the city seeks proposals only from artists residing in the region between Santa Barbara, San Diego and Palm Desert, an imaginary rectangular area with Palm Desert being the furthest east.

Artists are requested to submit the following by May 8, 2018:

  1. A one-page letter explaining your artistic outlook and interest in this project.
  2. A one- or two-page resume of your professional history, expertise, and your art/design experience related to public art.
  3. Up to 10 images of 3-4 pertinent, permanent public art projects. At least one project must be completed with a minimum $25,000 budget. These must be accompanied by an image list that includes titles, dates, locations, media, dimensions, budget of each project represented. Also list the public agency or organization you worked with to complete each project. Please be sure to clearly identify images with their descriptions using image file names.
  4. Three professional references identifying names, organizations, addresses, and phone/e-mail contact information, listed on a single page.

All documents should labeled with artist name and be submitted in pdf format with the exception of image files, which must be .jpgs no larger than 2MB each.

Schedule and Selection Process

Artists must submit the above-listed items by midnight, May 8, 2018.

Submittals will be reviewed by a jury of civic leaders and art professionals who will select
finalists, based on experience and artistic approach. Selected finalists will be notified by

The selected finalists will be invited to El Segundo in beginning of June to view the potential
project sites and gather information.

The selected finalists will be provided with a stipend of $1,000 each and will have until July
31st to submit their final proposals, with visual representation of concepts and budget
estimates including shipping and installation. A second jury of professionals will select the
winning artist who will then contract with the city.

The city anticipates final installation of the completed artwork in beginning of 2019.
